English Abstract

When the radius of protection against bird droppings is determined for 330 kV insulators in line with the standard GB/T 35695-2017, the influence of the shielding ring is ignored. Also, bird droppings can’t be prevented from flashing accidents by the protection range with a radius of 0.85 m from the center of the insulator axis. Therefore, it is proposed in this paper to determine the bird droppings protection range (BDPR) by introducing a rotational scanning method along the shielding ring boundary. It is discovered that the average breakdown electric field strength (BEFS) of the residual air gap (RAG) is 3.38 kV/cm when the cotton cord rope end is above the cylindrical tube of the shielding ring, 3.0 kV/cm when the rope end is positioned on the outside of the cylindrical tube, and 2.7 kV/cm when the rope end is located on the outer-side of the curved tube of the shielding ring. The other three shielding rings are used to verify the universality of the proposed method in determining the range of protection against bird droppings flashover.
